Hazel Irene Kingsbury Ashcraft Jump Jonesboro- Ms. Hazel Irene Kingsbury Ashcraft Jump of Jonesboro, died on Sunday, June 23, at Flo Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro, Arkansas. She was born on September 28,1928, in Cavendish , Vt. Ms. Jump was the daughter of the late Harold Hills Kingsbury, and the late Irene Mae Kingsbury. Hazel graduated from Rutland High School, and attended Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. She graduated with honors, and began her career in journalism included working in the advertising department at the Burlington Daily News in Burlington, Vermont. She later worked at the Arkansas Baptist Magazine in Little Rock, Arkansas, and worked as a reporter for the Martinsville Daily Times in Martinsville, Indiana. Hazel and her family then moved to Marked Tree, Arkansas, where the she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, and was very active in the community. She was the Co-owner of the Marked Tree Publishing Co. Newspaper with her husband Fred E. Ashcraft. They owned the Tribune and Lepanto News Record for 18 years. She was active in City Council, Garden Club, DAR, and all community activities. After relocation to Jonesboro, Arkansas, she then finished her journalism career with the Jonesboro Sun Newspaper in Jonesboro, Ar., where she wrote many feature stories and articles, including a newspaper story on the Westside School Shootings that was entered for a Pulitzer prize award in journalism. After her retirement from the Jonesboro Sun, she wrote feature stories for the Jonesboro “Occasions” Magazine. She was a devoted member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and had extensive knowledge in genealogy and traced her lineage and family history back to the American Revolution. She was a member of the Garden Club, Red Hats Society, Book Readers Club, and she was a member of St. Timothy's Anglican Church in Jonesboro. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Hills Kingsbury, Irene Mae Kingsbury of Ludlow, Vermont; A sister, Velma Tyl of Rutland, Vt; Her first husband, Fred E. Ashcraft, of Huntsville, Alabama; Her husband, Rev. John Dobbs Jump, of Jonesboro, Ar., and a daughter, Ellen Harrington Ashcraft Helms, of Marion, Ar. Hazel is survived by three daughters, Anne Ashcraft Vaught (Sam)of Bloomington, In.; Sarah Ashcraft Gillis of Jonesboro, Ar.; Susan Ashcraft Rodriquez (Josh) of Longview, Texas; one brother: Dana Kingsbury of Adam Massachusetts. She also leaves six grandchildren; Jason Vaught, Lauren Vaught Fox, Joseph Gillis, Kathleen Gillis Laden, Susan Self, and Jacob Terrell. She also leaves seven great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, June 29, at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, 419 West Highland Drive, Jonesboro, Ar. at 2:00 p.m. With Father Thomas McGee officiating. Burial will be private, under the direction of Faith Funeral Service, Manila, Arkansas.

    Hazel was one of a kind. It was an honor to work with her at The Sun and as a contributing writer to Jonesboro Occasions. She was a treasure and I am thankful that she befriended me all those years ago. My deepest condolences to her family.
